La Hermandad Pre-Rafaelita (Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood) - GALERÍA: William Holman Hunt






La Hermandad Pre-Rafaelita 
(Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood) 

.....1848, año revolucionario en la vieja Europa. La Restauración absolutista tocó a su fin y por doquier, desde la muy revolucionaria Francia, se expandió el deseo de cambio, acorde con una revolución industrial que conmovió los fundamentos de la sociedad europea y occidental. Si esto ocurría a nivel político y económico (ese mismo año Marx y Engels presentaron y editaron su Manifiesto Comunista), en lo social no iba a dejar de tener menos impronta: el arte se conmovió y, fiel reflejo siempre de la imagen sociocultural a la que representa, de esa conmoción, con ansias de renovación, surgieron movimientos diversos (algunos de ellos anunciando ya las vanguardias), entre ellos, en Gran Bretaña, el que se dio en llamar Prerrafaelismo, procedente de un germen originario, con carácter de hermandad secreta, denominada Hermandad Pre-Rafaelita (Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood).
.....Este germen fundacional lo formaban tres pintores: John Everett Millais (cuya obra podemos ver en el anterior post, enlazando desde aquí), Dante Gabriel Rossetti (obra también disponible en este blog, en post del 10 de abril de 1013, con enlace aquí) y William Holman Hunt (a quien  está dedicado este post y cuya obra aparecerá más adelante). Hunt y Millais eran estudiantes en la Royal Academy of Arts, dirigida a la sazón por el muy académico Sir Joshua Reynolds (Sir Sloshua para los díscolos estudiantes), mientras que Rossetti estudiaba con Ford Madox Brown. Los tres se confabularon para reorientar su arte hacia derroteros más realistas y menos hueramente esteticistas —aún herederos del manierismo tardo barroco—; para ello volvieron la vista a la estética temprano-renacentista, de colores vivos y amor al detalle, de minuciosidad en lo técnico y espiritualidad en lo expresivo, previa a Rafael (de ahí el nombre con el que —a modo de declaración de intenciones— se dieron a conocer), más enfocada, por tanto, en el Quattrocento, e, incluso, en los maestros del temple del Trecento. Así: Giotto, Paolo Uccello, Fra Angelico, Mantegna, Filippo Lippi, Piero della Francesca o Sandro Botticelli, serían los modelos expresivos hacia los que mirar. Sobre esta base técnica y estilística colocarían el armazón realista y espiritual antes citado.

.....Una intención realista y espiritual que buscaba una adaptación al espíritu de los tiempos que la revolucionaria Europa demandaba en aquel momento. Pero, contradictoriamente, la buscaba en escenarios no contemporáneos, sino legendarios, medievales, incluso mitológicos, cuando éstos portaban un componente moralizante; el tema religioso, bien tradicional y piadoso, bien crítico con una tradición demasiado idealizante, fue un tema recurrente en todos los pintores de este movimiento. El enfoque naturalista de la temática, apoyado en un cientifismo en boga que parecía abrir nuevos horizontes a la explicación del universo, y a la contemplación cósmica de un ser humano cada vez más humano y menos divino, es otra característica suya (en contraposición al academicismo oficial, en el que la naturaleza era tratada en un segundo plano, o, simplemente, carecía de protagonismo).
.....John Ruskin, prestigioso escritor y crítico inglés, les prestaría su pluma y contribuiría a plasmar su ideario, que podría resumirse en cuatro principios:

- Expresar ideas auténticas y sinceras.
Estudiar con atención la Naturaleza, para aprender a expresar estas ideas.
Seleccionar en el arte de épocas pasadas lo directo, serio y sincero, descartando todo lo convencional, autocomplaciente y aprendido de memoria.
- Buscar la perfección en la creación de pinturas y esculturas.

.....Todo ello con el objetivo de desafiar las convenciones artísticas del momento, valiéndose, por ejemplo, de la iluminación uniforme (en detrimento de la académica que precisaba un foco principal y otro secundario para crear sombras y fuertes contrastes) que da la impresión de pinturas planas y uniformes; una composición más homogénea distribuida en toda la superficie del lienzo (en lugar de primar las composiciones piramidales); un detallismo minucioso, sobre todo de los objetos o figuras situados en primer plano (enmendando el tratamiento difuso o borroso que recibían estos mismos objetos, no protagonistas, en el academicismo); una brillantez de los colores conseguida al ser aplicados sobre una fina y aún húmeda capa de fondo blanco extendida sobre el dibujo (a modo de los primigenios pintores al temple renacentistas).
.....Este enfoque renovador, a más de realista y naturalista, también se ejerció sobre una fuente de inspiración literaria, léase poética o dramática, al reclamar una simbiosis entre las distintas artes (pintar emociones antes escritas, y descritas, en forma de poemas o dramas). De este modo, Shakespeare, Keats, Tennyson o Browning prestarían los sujetos a las obras prerrafaelitas, dotando su temática pictórica, además, de otra característica: el realismo mágico y simbólico —que anunciaría sin ir más lejos el simbolismo posterior.

.....Así pues, espiritualidad, romanticismo, naturalismo, realismo, expresados con medios y técnicas rescatados del primer renacimiento a los que se dotó de nueva perspectiva, de renovado enfoque, donde el figurativismo, por un lado, se muestra más esquemático en su expresividad, pero, por otro, gana en un detallismo casi fotográfico, y donde el color se ofrece en todo su brillo y esplendor. La temática, así mismo, al tiempo que extiende y fija la mirada en derredor, captando con minuciosidad todo lo que a la vista se ofrece, recrea escenas históricas o legendarias, en muchas ocasiones intencionadamente procedentes de la ficción literaria, con el fin de situar al observador más cercano al sentimiento que la tela desea expresar. Se busca suscitar una implicación emocional y no sólo un sentimiento estético ante la obra de arte (esto dará lugar, además de al simbolismo anteriormente citado, al romanticismo más realista).
.....Esta inicial pretensión de compatibilizar el mensaje realista con una estética medievalista y literaria no sería admitida por todos los componentes, creándose, a los pocos años, dos corrientes: la realista, con Hunt y Millais —más dramática—; y la medievalista, con Rossetti y sus seguidores, Edward Burne-Jones y William Morris —más poética.
.....A pesar de que el grupo como tal tuvo un corto recorrido en el tiempo (poco más de un lustro), su influencia se dejaría sentir notoriamente en gran parte de la pintura posterior, al menos hasta la llegada de las vanguardias, siendo posible seguir su huella en la pintura inglesa hasta ya entrado el siglo XX.
